Coconut Grove, FL - Early Wednesday morning, a Coconut Grove family experienced a frightening encounter when a naked man allegedly tried to enter their home, prompting police and mental health intervention.
Surveillance footage shows the man opening a side gate, running into the backyard, and pulling on a door handle.
The homeowner, identified only as Sophie, reported hearing the doorknob being violently manipulated, causing damage that required a locksmith to fix.
The man is then seen entering the pool area, walking around, and eventually leaving the property.
Sophie described the event as extremely unsettling for her and her children, noting uncertainty about whether the man had a weapon or other means to enter the home.
Miami Police said officers initially received a call around 4:30 a.m. from the man’s family, who reported that he had fled his residence two blocks away, had not taken his prescribed medication, and was experiencing hallucinations.
Shortly afterward, police were contacted by Sophie about the man at her door.
After reviewing the surveillance video, officers did not observe criminal intent and noted the individual appeared to be in a state of mental distress.
A certified crisis intervention team evaluated him and determined he showed signs of mental illness.
He was placed under the Baker Act and transported to a mental health facility for evaluation and care for up to 72 hours.
Sophie has expressed concern about the man’s potential release after this period and has implemented additional security measures around her home.
Miami Police confirmed that officers are trained to recognize mental health issues and consider them when determining whether to make an arrest.
The identity of the individual has not been publicly released.
