The Louisiana man who went viral for speaking out against GOP redistricting efforts is considering a run for public office.
Marshan Camese attended a Louisiana State Senate committee hearing on May 12, where he criticized proposed congressional maps and called MAGA the “last breath of the Confederacy.”
“I have no doubt in my mind that the map’s gonna pass. If y’all could give us less than zero seats, you would do it,” Camese said. “Y’all do this under the orders of somebody that said the Civil Rights Act was harmful to white people, that it caused reverse racism.”
His speech quickly went viral, with many commenters suggesting that Camese run for public office. While he told HuffPost that he is not ruling out the possibility, he explained that he is unsure a traditional Democratic platform will help launch a successful campaign.
Camese has reportedly been in touch with Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) and the Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), David Hogg, to discuss his options.
“I think I can trust them more for the type of values that I want to push forward, because I’m positive once I get to more microphones and start talking, that they’re gonna do the same thing they did with Graham (Platner),” he told HuffPost.
Following last month’s Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which weakened Section 2 protections under the Voting Rights Act, several Southern states have since faced renewed redistricting battles ahead of the midterms.
Louisiana State senators passed a plan to scrap the district on May 14, according to PBS. It now needs approval from the House before it can potentially be signed into law by Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry.
Similar proposals are facing legal battles in states like Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, the latter of which saw Gov. Bill Lee sign a new map into law on May 8, splitting the majority-Black Memphis district into three.
