A Georgia mother has been arrested after her seven-year-old son died earlier this year when his head became trapped in a car window.
On Monday (September 29), 32-year-old Kandice Grace was taken into custody on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children in connection with the death of her son, Mazi Simmons.
Simmons' death unfolded on April 6 when police responded to reports of an unresponsive child at a home in southwest Atlanta. Officers found Simmons in the back seat of his mother’s car with his head stuck in the window. He was sitting next to his two younger siblings, according to an arrest warrant obtained by PEOPLE.
Simmons, who wasn't breathing at the time, was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to the warrant, Grace was found passed out in the driver’s seat. Police believe that while Grace was unconscious, Simmons became trapped in the window.
A witness told investigators that Grace had stopped by his home after 10 p.m. the night before and left the children in the car, saying she didn’t want them to come inside. The next morning, the same witness reportedly found Grace’s vehicle still in the parking lot and saw Simmons' head hanging out of the window. He banged on the car in an attempt to wake her.
When investigators arrived at the scene, Grace was inside a neighbor’s home with her youngest child. Officers attempted to interview Grace, but she allegedly kept passing out while holding her child.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for Grace’s blood and urine. The results later came back positive for opioids and THC, the warrant states.
