The Sonya Massey Act has been signed into law in Illinois, requiring more comprehensive background checks in police hirings, per CBS News.

Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black mother, was fatally shot by former Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson while checking on a pot of boiling water in her Springfield home in July 2024. According to prosecutors, Massey posed no threat and was saying "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus" when Grayson opened fire. Grayson, who was fired from the sheriff's department, is facing first-degree murder charges.

The former officer had a checkered employment history, which included high-speed chases, aggressive behavior, and performance issues. None of this information was shared with Sangamon County during his hiring.

The Sonya Massey Act, signed into law on Tuesday (August 12) by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, aims to prevent similar tragedies by requiring all state police departments to thoroughly vet applicants before making a job offer. Agencies must review all prior employment records, including disciplinary actions, psychological fitness exams, and any past criminal or misconduct investigations. Applicants must authorize full disclosure from all former employers.

“Officers with histories of serious disciplinary issues should not be serving in our communities,” Pritzker said Tuesday. “Our justice system needs to be built on trust.”

The measure passed both chambers of the Illinois legislature with bipartisan support. Massey's family, who attended the bill signing, said they hope the law sets an example for other states.

“Thank you for your support, and God bless you,” Donna Massey, the victim's mother, said.

Grayson is set to stand trial for Massey’s murder in October.
