California Governor Gavin Newsom has vowed to draw new congressional maps aimed at helping Democrats "take back the House" and “End the Trump Presidency" amid gerrymandering efforts in Texas backed by the president.

Newsom took to X, formerly Twitter, to launch his threat against Trump, mocking the president's all-cap style on social media.

"DONALD 'TACO' TRUMP … 'MISSED' THE DEADLINE!!! CALIFORNIA WILL NOW DRAW NEW, MORE 'BEAUTIFUL MAPS,' THEY WILL BE HISTORIC AS THEY WILL END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY (DEMS TAKE BACK THE HOUSE!)," the governor wrote Tuesday (August 12).

Newsom's comments come as Trump-backed Texas Republicans attempt mid-decade redistricting in the state, which could give the GOP an additional five House seats. Texas Democrats have fled the state to block the proposed redraw of the congressional map. Lawmakers argue the new map in Texas will suppress voters of color and is a blatant power grab orchestrated by Trump to maintain control in Washington.

Newsom warned Trump that if "red states" don't halt their partisan remaps, California will retaliate. A spokesperson confirmed that draft new maps for California are expected on Friday (August 15).

Newsom has previously weighed putting them before voters in a special November election. However, California currently uses an independent redistricting commission to draw legislative and congressional districts without direct input from elected officials. That commission already completed its once-a-decade map update following the 2020 Census.

The proposal for new maps would amend California's 2008 constitutional framework to allow temporary legislative redraws for 2026, 2028, and 2030, reverting to the existing independent commission after 2030.
