A Kohl's employee is being accused of racial profiling after she was caught on video following a Black customer out of the store and searching her bag of purchases.
Now-viral video of the incident shared by the shopper on TikTok shows her encounter with a white employee outside of Kohl's in Jacksonville, Florida. In the video, the customer was walking toward the parking lot when the employee, identified as Shelby, confronted her and began digging through her stopping bag.
The worker demanded to see the customer's receipt for her purchases, which included pants and sweaters.
"You’re saying I need a receipt for what? Why are you checking my bag?” the customer asked.
“Ma’am, I just need the receipt,” the employee responded.
The shopper complied and handed over her receipt, proving she had paid for the pants. However, the employee went on to suggest that the customer had stolen the sweaters.
“There were sweaters, they said," the worker said.
“I paid them for the sweaters! I paid her! Do you see the sweaters on there?” the customer replied.
When the shopper asked for the employee’s name, the worker responded, “You’re good,” before walking away.
Social media users called out the employee over the apparent act of racial profiling.
"They are NOT supposed to do this. Call corporate," one TikTok user commented.
"The policy does not ever tell a single employee to follow anyone out to the street," another person wrote.
"Sue them or make a formal complaint to Kohls corporate office. I can confirm they’re not supposed to do this," a third user said.
