Several California officers are being accused of excessive force following the violent arrest of a Black man in a grocery store, per FOX 11.

The arrest of 36-year-old Travon Attison unfolded on Thursday (January 2) at a Food 4 Less store in San Bernardino. Video of the arrest shows officers taking Attison to the ground in the grocery store. One officer appeared to punch Attison multiple times as the others held him down.

Before the arrest, family members said Attison had gotten upset and loud after a grocery store employee told him: "Whassup, cuz." Attison took offense to the statement, believing the employee was stereotyping him as a gang member.

A security guard called police after attempting to de-escalate the situation.

Attison's family believes there was "no reason for Attison's arrest, let alone the way in which it happened." Attison was arrested on charges of felony assault and resisting an officer. According to the San Bernardino Police Department, Attison was on parole and has a lengthy criminal history.

Family members said they want the officer who threw punches to be removed from duty.

"We came for hot links and hot dogs," said one relative, "and we got police brutality."
